Having Simon Cowell as a boss has got to be tricky, but the straight-talking music mogul proved how tough he can be when he played an epic prank on his Britain’s Got Talent judge Amanda Holden.
Simon took part in BBC Radio 1’s Call or Delete as part of Nick Grimshaw’s Breakfast Show on Friday, and managed to pull off a particularly mean joke as he told Amanda she was being replaced.
And it wasn’t just any celeb Simon claimed he was bringing in to sit in Amanda’s long-held BGT spot, as he told the TV star that his X Factor favourite Cheryl Fernandez-Versini would be taking her place.
Simon played the prank to perfection, keeping an amazingly straight face as he called Amanda from the Radio 1 studios.
The blonde was immediately suspicious though, as she answered the call with a ‘what have I done, why are you ringing me?’
After some small talk, Simon asked if Amanda was alone before telling her to find someone more private. Once the star was safely hidden ‘in a cupboard’, her boss dropped the bombshell.
Explaining he wanted to ‘shake things up a little bit on the live shows’ for the new series of BGT, Simon prefaced his statement by reassuring Amanda that ‘it doesn’t affect you financially and it’s something they did in Germany and it worked.’
‘Our idea is you do Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday, obviously the final and then Tuesday and Thursday we replace you with Cheryl,’ he told her.
Amanda seemed genuinely shocked by the news, asking her boss if he was joking.
‘Look she’s younger and because she’s a singer I think what it will do, it’ll bring in a different audience and then when you come back it’s kind of like they’ve missed you, if that makes sense,’ reasoned Simon.
Amanda, to her credit, took the news pretty well as she told Simon ‘if that’s what you think’s best,’ with Simon agreeing, ‘all I care about is the show babe,’ he insisted.
When Simon suggested she take notes while watching at home, Amanda was adamant she would just ‘watch it at home, and cry and then come in and be on it the next day,’ but seemed to cotton on when Simon explained another phase of his big plan.
‘I’m thinking that I want to swap David on the semi-final with Jeremy Clarkson which I think will be amazing,’ he said much to Amanda’s astonishment.
Finally Simon let Amanda off the hook, telling her she was part of Grimmy’s Call or Delete.
‘My knees have a gone to jelly,’ the TV presenter screamed down the phone. ‘When you said all you care about is the show, that was the worst bit. I hate you so much. Oh my god, I need a gin,’ she added.
Simon, Amanda, David Walliams and Alesha Dixon had a busy day of promo duties on Thursday for the new series of Britain’s Got Talent which kicks off on ITV on Saturday night. Cheryl meanwhile will reportedly be back for another series of X Factor later this year, with sources suggesting Simon is determined to keep the singer
