EastEnders legend Pam St Clement has confessed she had a life-changing lesbian fling behind her husband’s back as their marriage was ending.
The star, who played matriarch Pat Butcher on Albert Square for 26 years, was in her 30s when she fell for a woman on a trip to Australia while her civil servant husband stayed at home in the UK.
“For the first time an unexpected emotion hit me like a bombshell, its shockwave engulfing me,” Pam says as she reveals her fling on a 1975 world tour with the Royal Shakespeare Company.
In her sensational new autobiography, Pam, 72, also tells how an axe-wielding maniac launched a terrifying homophobic attack on her and a group of friends outside a well-known gay club.
And she reveals she had to drive her car straight at him to save them all.
Opening up for the first time about her early years concealing her bisexuality, Pam says flying out to Australia gave her the breathing space she needed.
“The distance allowed me an objective view of my marriage – especially after we landed in Sydney,” she says. “It was a pretty gay city even then, a mecca of fun and outrageous alternativeness.
