Gabbana has tried to defend the comments made by himself and his business partner Dolce regarding gay adoption.
After they branded IVF babies ‘synthetic’, Gabbana has now said it was not their intention ‘to judge others’.
He said in a statement: “We believe firmly in democracy and we think freedom of expression is essential for that.
“We talked about our way of looking at the world, but it was not our intention to express a judgment on other people’s choices. We believe in freedom and love.”
Gabbana previously tried to defend the interview which featured in Italy’s Panorama magazine – after Elton John called for a boycott of the fashion label.
He wrote in response: “This is respect for a different opinion? #boycotteltonjohn.
“It is simply arrogant not to tolerate those who think like him (Sir Elton) poor thing. We live in a democratic country and respect the ideas of others.”
Elton had ranted at them: “How dare you refer to my beautiful children as “synthetic”.
“And shame on you for wagging your judgemental little fingers at IVF – a miracle that has allowed legions of loving people, both straight and gay, to fulfil their dream of having children.
“Your archaic thinking is out of step with the times, just like your fashions. I shall never wear Dolce and Gabbana ever again. #BoycottDolceGabbana.”
He was quickly backed by a host of other celebrities who back their boycott.
The designers had told the publication: “We oppose gay adoptions,” they told the publication. “The only family is the traditional one.
“No chemical offsprings and rented uterus: life has a natural flow, there are things that should not be changed.”
Dolce said that creating children “must be an act of love”, adding: “You are born to a mother and a father – or at least that’s how it should be.
“I call children of chemistry, synthetic children. Uteri [for] rent, semen chosen from a catalog.”
